BETULA AETNENSIS
Un bosco di betulle in Sicilia è una rarità, essendo questa una specie arborea tipica delle alte latitudini dei Paesi del Nord Europa. Se a questa eccezionalità si aggiunge la particolarità della location, dove il colore che fa da sfondo è il nero della lava del vulcano Etna, allora il paesaggio è unico. La Betula Aetnensis con la corteccia bianca e liscia, solcata da caratteristici disegni a forma di occhio, spicca, infatti, longilinea ed elegante sulle nere distese di sabbia vulcanica. La peculiarità, che la distingue dalle altre specie del genere Betula, è un apparato conduttore che si è adattato a sopravvivere in condizioni di caldo e freddo estremi. Essa è presente solo sul territorio etneo a quote comprese tra 1450 e 2000 metri. La sua presenza sull’isola viene ricondotta agli effetti dell’ultima glaciazione sugli habitat siciliani. Con il tempo essa si è evoluta, adattandosi al clima e al terreno vulcanico, fino a diventare endemica e simbolo dell’Etna. Un simbolo che però sta scomparendo. Le betulle dell’Etna sono malate. Dalle piante morte gronda la linfa come un corpo che si dissangua.
Betula Aetnensis - A symbol that's dying
A birch forest in Sicily is a rarity, as this is an arboreal species typical of the high latitudes of the countries of Northern Europe. If to this exceptionality is added the particularity of the location, where the background color is the black of the lava of the volcano Etna, then the landscape is unique. The Betula Aetnensis with its smooth white bark, furrowed by characteristic eye-shaped designs, stands out, in fact, long and elegant on the black expanses of volcanic sand. The peculiarity, which distinguishes it from other species of the genus Betula, is a conducting apparatus that has adapted to survive in extreme heat and cold. It is present only on Etna territory at altitudes between 1450 and 2000 meters. Its presence on the island is traced back to the effects of the last glaciation on Sicilian habitats. Over time it has evolved, adapting itself to the climate and the volcanic soil, until it becomes endemic and symbol of Etna. A symbol that is disappearing. The birches of Etna are sick. From the dead plants the sap loses like a body that loses its blood.
