VALLE DELL'ETNA - Sebastiano e Giuseppe, 25 e 15 anni d’età, due fratelli che la Sicilia ce l’hanno nel sangue. L’amore per quest’isola brucia nelle loro vene come le lingue di lava che scendono lungo i fianchi dell’Etna, alle cui pendici vivono da quando sono nati. Entrambi spinti dalla vocazione per gli animali, hanno deciso di fare i pastori, portando avanti il mestiere del padre e del nonno in una terra tanto affascinante quanto crudele. Il contatto con la natura, il valore della tradizione, un legame che unisce a doppio filo questi due ragazzi con la loro isola. Quel legame che molti hanno perso. Un lavoro duro, fatto di sacrifici, che richiede tenacia, pazienza e molto spirito di adattamento.Sveglia alle cinque del mattino, mungitura, pascolo, produzione di formaggio, pulitura delle stalle e poi di nuovo mungitura. Ritmi lenti e faticosi, in spazi/campidove spesso non hanno l’autorizzazione. Un continuo confronto con la ciclicità della natura. Lunghe attese sotto il vento, la neve, la pioggia e scelte fatte solo in base alle esigenze degli animali. Sebi aiuta anche le pecore a partorire, lo ha imparato da suo padre. Mosse decise, sangue freddo; sa quanto siano importanti e decisivi i primi momenti del parto, ma sa anche qual è la sorte di molte piccole vite che aiuta a venire al mondo. Un amaro paradosso. Durante le lunghe ore del pascolo la fatica, il silenzio e la solitudine sono le uniche compagne di questi due fratelli. Il più giovane, Giuseppe, spesso porta con sé i libri e studia mentre guarda le pecore. Vuole riscattare un antico mestiere e la sua utilità sociale.
